The indiscriminate surveillance of social media, email, mobile phones, computer equipment, internet etc poses a serious threat to the rights of the individual and the proper functioning of democracy, as well as empowers organised crime to carry out criminal activities and pervert the rule of law including compromising government officials and targeting those who speak out against the status quo.![]()

As an individual whose privacy is under attack and has been subjected to a prolonged period of harassment, intimidation, death threats, attempts at criminal entrapment, house break-ins, property damage, business interference, digital interference including mobile phone interference, email interference and manipulation of data, online interference, social media interference, websites interference, postal interference, legal interference, financial interference including interference in the purchase of my family home and the thwarting of financial transactions, death and disappearance of pets, interference overseas, sabotaging of social activities and illegal surveillance, etc, (since speaking out against corruption in 2009 and raising concerns about election interference with An Garda Siochana), I am deeply concerned about the unwarranted surveillance of law abiding citizens, the potential for mass surveillance in Ireland, and the uncontrolled use of state resources in conjunction with organised crime to target law abiding citizens (given the fact I have made repeated documented complaints over many years to local law enforcement and government agencies with no formal investigation ever taking place. The brazenness of these acts and the very clear sense of impunity from those committing them indicates for whatever reason the likelihood of An Garda Siochana taking action to be virtually zero, sending a clear message by example to the ordinary person not to upset the status quo as their lives will be ruined if they do so with no help whatsoever from law enforcement or government agencies.)![]()

We demand assurance that monitoring of personal digital equipment is strictly limited to situations necessitated by criminal activities and only targets legitimate individuals with fool proof measures in place to monitor and record all such activity. We also seek confirmation that there is no special task force within An Garda Síochána assigned with the harassment or intimidation of any nominated person within the state. ![]()

In this digital age where personal data can be easily accessed and misused, we need fool proof controls on surveillance practices to prevent abuse particularly as we enter the age of Artificial Intelligence where daily surveillance of all citizens becomes a distinct possibility. I recently visited the Dutch National Holocaust Museum in Amsterdam.![]()

Since childhood I have been very aware of WWII (thanks to the BBC TV series ‘The World at War’) and the Holocaust but back then no mention was made of life after the war ended for survivors of the Holocaust, which this exhibit highlights. ![]()

The Jewish survivors of WWII in the Netherlands became stigmatised for having been persecuted, as did many of those who went to the newly founded state of Israel who were sometimes referred to as 'SOAPS'. When someone is dehumanised it seems to add a stigma regardless. ![]()

It’s also quite chilling to see that the Nazi’s made lists (see below) of the numbers of Jews in each European country including Ireland, which remained neutral throughout the war. These lists were part of the discussions held by Nazi command in seeking a final solution.![]()

As a child I naively believed all the shocking lessons of the war would be ingrained in the human psyche but in fact it’s the small minority who are impervious to such lessons and frankly don’t care, who are the threat (along with a frightened or indifferent society) which is why we need to maintain robust political institutions.![]()

There can be no justification for the denigration and dehumanisation of any group of people. These are the lessons we need to inculcate into the national psyche.
The case made at the ICJ by the Irish AG is one we can all be proud of and was well received by the Arab world. It left no stone unturned. I hope this same spirit of justice for all also extends to our own people.![]()

The death and destruction of Gaza is heart breaking and exemplifies the heart and soul of the far right. There can be no doubt as to the true nature of this war as Palestinian institutions, hospitals and cultural sites are wiped from the map while ordinary people are mowed down in the street as they scramble for food to stave off starvation.![]()
